‘The’ British summer.

Summer 2009 was great. There was a BBQ,  exposed flesh, several uses of the bikini and more than one application of sun cream. If I am not mistaken, there were even a couple of cases where the purchase of ‘after sun’ was necessary. So what do we have to complain about? Well…everything obviously!

The well awaited English summer; what a perfect time it is and for a nation of qualified moaners, we do love to hate its unpredictability.

Whilst the weather remains baffled, ‘We’ the British people, are able to take multi-tasking to new levels; what does one do with bonus moaning time and endless queuing opportunities? We do both, at once.

For the mother who wants to picnic in the sunshine with her little one, this is a time of complication and confusion. She has an overly-hyper two year old and is trapped in her cramped two-bed flat. What else is there to do but visit the grandparents?

The pensioner, well, everything is good enough to gossip about so we leave them to to their devises; they will always come up with something. Maybe the sudden change of weather is their evil ploy, for that last- resort visit to Gran’s to become necessary.

For the students who want to do anything and everything but write essays and revise, bad weather in June is probably their saviour (although they will deny it); giving them ample opportunity to study hard for that lovely debt-laden degree!

Then, the news of a heat-wave?

We stress, get stuck in endless queues of traffic, panic buy disposable barbeques and after-sun (for the impending self inflicted second degree burns) and then what else is there to do but complain endlessly about the dreadful heat and humidity. But why? Because, that is what ‘We’ do best.

…British life is certainly unrivalled, with infinite moaning opportunities and indecisive weather, what more could we ask for?
