Gonzo piece about being a student at Winchester -
Winchester’s rolling hills and picturesque scenery does not scream out ‘Uni’ life’, yet I found great solace in the small city when arriving on that terrifying first day.
Unbelievably it has almost been a year and the fears of living away from home, working and meeting new people have long gone, along with the frightening prospect of what to cook every night and more importantly how to cook.
Prior to University, the idea of ‘lecturer’, conjured images of intimidating and unapproachable individuals, this was soon overturned with the introduction to my course and peers. It is only then that you can truly appreciate and understand mum’s favourite phrase; ‘everybody’s in the same boat’.
The realisation that Winchester is the last destination before ‘real life’ came soon after arriving, but the knowledge that there are people here who will help us through ‘check-in’ is the greatest comfort of all.

It’s always interesting to read about celebrities behaving badly. When they get kicked off their pedestal by a bad review they can throw some serious tantrums. If only their outbursts where taken seriously; instead the critics appear resilient and fairly amused by the ‘playground’ threats.

Registered with media guardian/journalism.co.uk/lga today. I think sites like these are really going to aid our background knowledge. Being able to read journalist’s blogs will give us a real insight to the industry. I am definitely going to look into registering with more as Graham suggested, which will enable us to look at a range of the styles of writing and language used in certain areas across the industry.

Council seeks local Ethnic groups.
“There are not many ethnic groups within Winchester which is perhaps something that would be prioritised.” That is the claim by the External Funding Officer.
The City Council launched the Community Chest scheme in April 2004, to make funding more accessible to local groups and to meet their priorities.
Local voluntary, community groups and registered charities can apply for a one-off grant of up to £500, if their activities are going to benefit the residents of Winchester. The Chest holds £10,000 for groups in 2008.
27 organisations benefited from the scheme last year, including the ‘Greenjackets’ Scout group, Winchester Film Society and Winchester Basketball League.
Oliver Golding, Winchester Film Society Publicity Officer said: “Grants allow the staging of film festivals and other cultural events that do not have a hope of getting a public performance as they will not make money… however there’s a strange political anomaly between the County and City Council and that is, that one won’t give unless the other does. Great if you can get them both signed up as we did, but if you can’t, you don’t get any funding.”
The Council also benefits from groups that apply. Bernice Heller, Partnership and External Funding Officer said: “the council has priorities; the grant encourages groups to undertake activities that meet them.”

Work set in the People and Politics seminar last week – Seminar Work – Local MP
Filed under: Lecture comments!
Found the lecture really interesting and it definitely brought relief, i didnt know that so much of the news came from sources like the PA etc. It is nice to know that we’re not expected to be psychic or ’superman’ as Chris said.
The seminar was just as helpful, thinking about the different sources there are around. Our group looked at ‘Health and Fitness’, which didnt inspire much excitement at first but after thinking about it, i guess we were all surprised at the amount of sources we thought of.

The first lecture scared me to be honest but I think the key is preparation!
Im not normally amazingly organised but before the lecture I had a browse online, it helped me to understand the lecture, actually quite enjoyed it!
